...need for a slowdown was evident. But now, to an ever-growing number of businessmen, workers, consumers?and voters???the game plan sounds like an exercise in fantasy. The awkward months have lengthened into painful seasons, and the alleviation of inflation that was supposed to be worth all the unpleasantness seems nowhere in sight. In his 16 months in office, Nixon has posted an unenviable economic box score...

...polls are any indication, about one out of every five voters???something like 14 million Americans?will choose the moment's satisfaction and pick Wallace and General Curtis LeMay, his running mate, next month. Fervent Wallaceites may, of course, decide at the last minute that a vote for their man is a wasted ballot and switch to either Humphrey or Nixon, but there is no evidence that this will happen. The May survey, however, was taken before Indiana and Nebraska: these and future primaries could affect the polls in Kennedy's favor...

There were significant exceptions. In Texas, three Negroes became the first members of their race in 71 years to win election to the state legislature; Georgia re-elected all ten of its Negro legislators. In Alabama's Lowndes County, black voters???who outnumber whites 55% to 45%?were less than enthusiastic about Stokely Carmichael's aggressive Black Panther ticket, which went down to defeat. Elsewhere in the state, several Negroes were elected, notably Macon County's Lucius Amerson, 32, a Korean War paratrooper and former postal clerk who became the South's only Negro sheriff. In Dallas County, Selma...
