Bacharach supports Costello with mostly excellent arrangements which may leave his fans with a sense of deja vu: the twin flugelhorns, the wispy strings, the fuzzy horns, the retro female background singers. Only when Bacharach stretches his orchestrations into more rock-oriented territory does the music suggest outtakes from the schmaltzy Michael MacDonald recordings from the mid-80s. Few of the songs, though, sound so maudlin, and the melodies themselves stay thoroughly grounded in reality; these pop songs may be old-fashioned, but they sound far from melodramatic or artificial. Heartbreak itself, after all, is awfully old-fashioned...
...into from the choirgirl hotel, unfortunately, similar trends begin to appear in different songs. The bass line found in "Cruel" catches the listener's ear once again in "iieee," giving the album a disappointing aura of deja vu before it is even halfway listened to. "Black Dove (January)," the first of the album's quiet numbers, bears short chorus that immediately brings to mind the song "Past the Mission" from Under the Pink...

...Black, earned a combined $1.375 billion worldwide. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer's macho movies (The Rock, Con Air) do testosterrific at the wickets. So this Dirty Dozen in outer space will get a rousing send-off. If there's a question, it's about instant deja vu. Armageddon will be the second film this year to star Bruce Willis, to deal with an astral collision--and to destroy the Chrysler building...
Were Halston alive today, he would probably sense a chilling deja vu in all this business uncertainty. His label's demise was precipitated by the launching of the Halston III line he created for J.C. Penney in 1983. Not only were sales disappointing, but upscale establishments like Bergdorf Goodman, spurning a line that was also available in middle-class department stores, pulled the whole label off their racks.
