...their attempt to fathom the bombers' motives, many Americans discovered just how deep the paranoia runs among a small minority of their countrymen. It was easy to laugh at the wackier notions, uttered by the most normal-looking people speaking in reasoned tones: Russian troops are hidden in salt mines under Detroit waiting for their orders, the U.N. has a secret plan to disarm the public with the help of L.A. gangs. What was less easy to dismiss were those Americans who realize Janet Reno is not a paid agent of Jewish Colombian drug lords but who nonetheless...
...nothing wackier than this bombshell from the Major League Cabal: Oil Can Boyd is back as the first major-league scab, after crossing the picket line to sign with the White Sox organization...
...cast performs solidly, if not splendidly. Terrence Caza and Kathleen McNenny are suitably prim as Jack and Gwendolen and provide a nice contrast to the far wackier pair of Algernon and Cecily. As Algernon, Bill Mondy is a little too affected--even for the obvious dilettante the young Victorian is supposed to be. While Algernon is supposed to know he's being insufferable, the actor playing him should not let his own self-knowledge of how funny his lines are show through. Mondy's performance is a bit smug, particularly in the first...
...viewers still hung up on innovation, hope rests mainly on those singing crime fighters in Bochco's Cop Rock. That's a heavy burden for a quirky series that will probably alienate as many people as it will attract. If the show catches on, however, even wackier concoctions could be on the way. A rap-music Western, perhaps? The Flash moves into Knots Landing? An animated version of 60 Minutes? No telling what the networks might try next season. Or how disappointed we might be once...
Reddin's play, at the La Jolla Playhouse, is much the more complicated of the two -- and certainly the wackier. Instead of a naturalistic kitchen-sink drama, this is an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink melodrama-cum-farce, featuring fantasy sequences, flashbacks, ghosts, tall tales, quoted swatches of e.e. cummings verse and repeated incursions into a contemporary setting by a bearded and costumed Calvin. He recites his writings on predestination and free will and inveighs, sounding suspiciously like a televangelist, against the iniquities of Pop culture. The "war" of the title is not an event but a metaphor. It refers...
