...Squad (Tuesday, 7:30-8:30 p.m.). This show, also integrated, offers a trio of attractive but unlikely soulmates: a tousle-haired beat from Beverly Hills (Michael Cole), a lithe Afro cat from Watts (Clarence Williams III) and a blonde waif (Peggy Lipton). As undercover agents for the fuzz, they sometimes find that the badge is not their bag. Nonetheless, they manage to balk a blackmail-and-kidnap plot involving a gubernatorial candidate (his daughter is on acid). The dialogue staggers to keep pace. Sample: "Ain't it the mother truth?" Despite the fresh faces-particularly Williams...
...loves and understands the play gives it emotive depth. As Hogan, W. B. Brydon is a raffish, truculent blend of peasant guile and blather, while Mitchell Ryan's sodden, dandyish Jim Tyrone is a tarnished peacock straight from Old Broadway. Salome Jens, with hoydenish charm, discloses the vulnerable waif inside the intimidating woman. Director Theodore Mann has sensitively staged the play in fidelity to O'Neill's intent: Moon does not brighten the sky, but mirrors itself in melancholy fragments on a swelling sea of sorrow...
...Edwardian England, an orphan named Kipps (Tommy Steele) finds a little girl on his waif length (Julia Foster). Before their friendship can mature, he is sent to far away London as an apprentice to a scrofulous Shylock. Kipps owns nothing in life but a sixpence, which he splits with his girl; he will come back to her, he promises, as soon as he can. But when his grandfather dies and leaves him a fortune, he forgets his vow and falls for a wealthy, beautiful snob. Can Kipps really be such a cad? Of course not. In the end, he loses...
Last week she rounded off a series of three appearances in a production of La Traviata created for her at the Frankfurt Opera. It was a lusty performance that emphasized the low-life origins of the heroine (who in the Dumas novel went from waif to courtesan to wreck within eight years). Silja contributed considerably to that characterization with a tense, far-ranging voice (31 octaves) and a spectacular stage presence that can flash with the music's mood from tigress to tragedienne. The ultimate tribute to the Silja Traviata was apparent immediately after each performance; at the Frankfurt...
...work harder, think deeper, love more and even look better than any previous generation. Other cultures worship gods or ancestors; Americans revere children, and they must be doing something right in the process. "Everything for the kids" is a U.S. creed that moves G.I.s to feed every war waif in sight; that goads concern for the country's ghetto schools; that has already provided most American children with the best medical care, free education, anti-child-labor laws and unparalleled freedom from adult repression...
