McCue is a passable Vanya, but he proves unwilling or incapable of ditching his distracting mannerisms. In the first two acts he consistently plays for laughs, a crotchety jokester or ludicrous lover, jerking his body back from the waist and vocalizing like a pompous burgermeister with an occasional British falsetto. This great and silly character--simple to the point of transparency--becomes so cluttered as to be almost impenetrable. The rest of his performance is sloppy but sometimes affecting. ...Michigan Daily reported that the five freshmen who made the varsity hockey squad were taken Sunday night to the off-campus home of one of the players where they were given alcohol until they became sick. Once one of them was aired he would begin improvising. "Everything," he said, "is happening right now." He added with a grin: "If there's no drama...
...England campus in summer session. Small groups of students sprawl on smooth lawns, chat in the green shade of old maple trees, and stroll among rosy brick and crisp white clapboard buildings. But this is no typical summer school. The students are somewhat longer of tooth and thicker of waist than the average undergraduate, and their chatter is about polymers and photoconduction, magnetic resonance and spectroscopy. They are participants in one of the Gordon Research Conferences, possibly the oldest and most eminent floating brain trust in the world...
