...Allen, 47, a man of long experience in the New Orleans school and an uninhibited buffoon. To get things warmed up, he raps out either Shake a Hand (everybody shakes a hand) or an insistent Kiss Your Baby (if there is no one to kiss unescorted women, a waiter may do the honors). Other numbers include such oldtime favorites as I Thought I Heard Benny Bolden Say, Trees, Memphis Blues, Basin Street...
Following my own advice, I heaped my plate with at least a dozen concoctions. One was a colorful combination of cranberries and bananas, another was reminiscent of hash. The waiter informed me that it was, "Peppers, apples, meat, pickles, fish, carrots, potatoes, and perhaps more." It was probably the "perhaps" I didn't like. When I'd finished the cheeses, cold cuts, fishes, meats, and salads I returned to the smorgasbord table. I was scraping the bottom of the banana and cranberry bowl as a plump, seventyish woman in chet's attire bustled in to fill the dish...
Finished with the book and too ashamed for another round of smorgasbord. I concluded the meal with three desserts, apple crunch cake, Norwegian rosettes, and rum pudding. After lapping up the last of the rum, I forgave my Scandinavian friends for serving French pastry and said goodbye to the waiter, the dishwasher, the cold chef, the hot chef, and the just plain chefs. At one end was a 12-ft. conference table, with a grimly busy stenographer, and in front of it stood Matusow, seeming right at home. Posing for pictures, he asked photographers if he should hold up his right hand, witness style. The first news man to question Matusow went straight to the point: "How can we be sure that what you tell us now is the truth?" Matusow replied blandly: "I feel that the truth kind of speaks for itself...
...Premier has grown increasingly remote. Most of the bright young brain-trusters who clustered about him in the early days and spouted eager advice while a barber shaved him or a waiter served lunch have been banished from the inner chambers. For intimate guidance, Mendès now relies on only three disciples-Jean Soutou, 43, and Claude Cheysson. 35, who are intelligent Quai d'Orsay types, and Simon Nora, 33, who is something of a financial wizard. Even emissaries specially summoned from as far away as Indo-China find themselves closeted with the young aides for lengthy interrogations...
