Searchlights raked the skies. Limousines nosed up to the blue-and-white canopy of Indianapolis' Clowes (pronounced Clues) Memorial Hall, unloading passengers into the glare of flood lights and popping flashbulbs. Remarked one ticket holder: "In all honesty, I'd probably not walk across the street to hear an opera, but this - this is some thing special."
