...lyrical self-help book. Like Bly, who uses a Grimm brothers' myth as his framework, Keen takes up the ancient theme that each man is on a spiritual journey, a quest for the grail of manhood. Bly's book is an original song of the road, a literary Walkman piping background music for the journey. Keen attempts to provide a rough road map for the trip, advising the spiritual traveler how to avoid the dead ends of combative machismo and the blind alleys of romantic obsession...

...Seal's secret: trendy merchandise is constantly turned over, while employees are handed weekly bonuses to help push it out the door. The chain's concept is "multigenerational," which in plain Valleyspeak means that gum- snapping, Walkman-toting ingenues and their miniskirted moms can sport the same fashions, from flowered denim shorts to psychedelic bikinis. ...larger question, of course, is the adequacy -- moral, material and martial -- of America. A month ago, conventional wisdom had the U.S. being overtaken as a great power by Japan. Perhaps. But is making a superior Walkman a better index of technological sophistication than making laser bombs that enter hangars through the front door? Is a nation's ability to make VCRs a better index of power than the ability to defeat aggression...
