...plea for labor peace, broadcasting employees at the giant state-run KBS and three other private TV and radio stations walked out Tuesday. They were joined by some 3,000 nurses and other unionized workers at 24 hospitals who rejoined the protests after ending their first round of walkouts a week ago. The outlawed Confederation of Trade Unions, which is organizing the protests, continues to disagree with the Labor Ministry on walkout totals. The Confederation, which claims a membership of 500,000, said 230,000 workers at 210 companies were taking part in the protest Tuesday and predicted the number...

Where was the commissioner in all of this? "We'll see what happens," Bud Selig, the moonlighting Milwaukee Brewers owner, said last Monday. Selig and Budig did manage to stave off the Tuesday walkout by promising to hear Alomar's appeal on Thursday. To add to the bad taste, 50,000 fans cheered and only a few booed as Alomar took the field at Camden Yards against the Cleveland Indians in Game One of their division series. But we haven't heard the last of the Alomar Affair. This could go beyond beyond-beyond...

BALTIMORE: Major League umpires agreed to suspend until Thursday a planned boycott of the playoffs just five minutes before the first American League game was set to begin. Umpires had threatened the walkout when the American League announced that Baltimore Orioles second baseman Roberto Alomar would not have to serve a five-game suspension until next season for spitting on umpire John Hirschbeck in a game last Friday. Alomar, a wonderful ballplayer but a lousy diplomat, then infuriated Hirschbeck with these comments after the game: "I used to respect him a lot. He had a problem with his family when...

...R.N.s with unlicensed technicians. The hospital says it has no plans to do this, but simply wants "the flexibility to operate in today's market," explains spokesman Robert de Luna. So, apparently, did Boston's prestigious Brigham and Women's Hospital, where nurses had to threaten a walkout last week to win assurance that R.N.s will not be replaced by unlicensed personnel. Similar showdowns can be expected nationwide, says Beverly Malone, president of the 180,000-member American Nurses Association, because "what happens on the coasts has a big influence on what happens throughout the country...
