...favorable news, the stock market had a good session yesterday under the leadership of steels," reported the New York Times one day last week. It was the understatement of the week. With 650,000 steelworkers on strike and 90% of the industry shut down, there seemed little cheer for Wall Street's traders; yet they scrambled to buy. Along with steels, oil and aircraft stocks pushed higher, and the 1956 bull market went up on three of the four trading days. By week's end the Dow-Jones industrial average stood at 504.14. The rise of 11.36 points...
...Wall. Last week Moscow's Pravda startled its readers by reprinting Dennis' article. It added a footnote explaining that Dennis was commenting on "material which the U.S. State Department has published in the press, calling it Comrade Khrushchev's report to the 20th Congress." Spread through three pages of Pravda, pasted on wall newspapers, it was the first official public acknowledgment in Russia of the existence of the speech and the juicy issues it raised. Because they made no distinction between art and craft, the early pioneer American painters did not lack craftsmanship; each of their canvases was at least as well painted as the wall on which it hung. But by European standards, early colonial art was medieval. Being mostly commoners cut off from London court life, the Puritans had remained unaware of Renaissance art. Instead of trying to paint people in the round, they produced flat, stylized maps of their sitters. The word for this, derived from medieval illuminating of manuscripts, was "limning." It permitted likenesses of a limited sort, but lifelikeness...
...Wall Street office last week, two shirtsleeved Washington State wheat farmers tackled a heroic task in a historic cause. As commissioners of Grant County's tiny (12,805 customers) Public Utility District No. 2, the farmers started signing their names 166,000 times on revenue bonds that will set in motion the nation's third biggest hydroelectric development (after Grand Coulee and Hoover Dams). It will be the first to be built under President Eisenhower's policy of power partnership between private and public utilities. The project: Columbia River dams and power plants at Priest Rapids...
...farmhouse of 1860 vintage, smoothed off, brightened and painted white inside, and furnished with Eero's furniture. (His mother lives on the back lot in a sleek modern house he designed to fit her favorite, handloomed, 25-ft.-long Finnish rug.) In cutting away a section of one wall to throw light on the main stairway of his old house, Saarinen has made the exterior what he considers "better Victorian than ever." The garage has been converted into a joint study, where Eero, working over his drafting table at night, glances up frequently to see Aline chewing up pencils...
