...defeat produced some vivid impressions that will stay fresh years from now when they look back on Nov. 7, 1978. Midwest Bureau Chief Benjamin Gate, for example, followed Illinois Senator Charles Percy throughout his come-from-behind re-election battle, and witnessed an extraordinary victory speech. Reports Cate: "Wan and misty-eyed, Percy could not control the trembling of his hands as he read his statement. The tough race had humbled a normally proud man." After Philadelphians defeated a proposal that would have allowed Mayor Frank Rizzo to seek a third term, New York Correspondent Robert Parker visited the headquarters...
Under the threat of extinction, professors are now giving their lectures more zeal, as well as sell, than they did in the past. Many a full professor who left his undergraduates mostly to wan and preoccupied teaching assistants is back in the classroom going all out. If the crunch on colleges could at last result in something like "teach or perish," instead of publish or perish, the uses of economic adversity might prove sweet indeed for American education...
...deal, you think? Well, just try to remember that this is Victorian England, and the entire ambiance of constipation is no coincidence. Strobe lights detonate at one end of the big room; Photographer Seltzer is working with Nancy Dutiel, a wan, lovely blonde who is new to the Slims ads. Tiegs, her hair piled and pinned with a flower, sits as Makeup Man Way Bandy, an old friend, dips his fingers into tiny pots of color and touches up her face. What he achieves is a stronger version of Cheryl: the wide eyes more enormous, cheekbones more prominent, the nose a more perfect narrow line. "The only thing you have to be careful with is her lips," says Bandy. "They're thin...
...menacing as ever, as will Princess Leia, Han Solo, the Wookie Chewbacca and computerdom's cutest robots, Artoo Detoo and Threepio. There will also be several new characters, "of various genres," as Creator George Lucas phrases it, together with "aliens, robots and others, including humans." What about Obi-wan-Kenobi, the role that last week brought Alec Guinness an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor? Lucas is suddenly circumspect. "Obi-wan's aura will be there," he says cautiously, "his essence, if you like...
