With its abandoned buildings, sloping streets, dead-ends and lampposts, Charlestown manages to be Gothic with out having any Gothic architecture. The macabre fascinated H.P. Lovecraft who used Charlestown as a setting for his book, "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward."
