...mind cash & carrying from Penney's to save dollars. This habit of year-in & year-out buying at Penney's has built the company, which has stores in every state, into the third biggest U.S. retail chain. Last year, only Sears, Roebuck & Co. and Montgomery Ward & Co., Inc. sold more goods than J. C. Penney, which rang up a whopping $885 million gross and a $47.8 million...

...convict and the girl whose life he may save never saw each other. The prisoner, 49, serving a life term for murder in New York State's Sing Sing prison, lay under guard in a ward in Ossining Hospital, on a hill overlooking the high-walled prison. The eight-year-old girl was in a private room in the same building. She was near death from leukemia, the cancer-like disease of the blood-making system for which no cure is known. Its list of clients became a sort of Burke's Peerage of the nation's corporations: Consolidated Vultee, Montgomery Ward, New York Life Insurance. Louis Johnson himself became a director of Consolidated and the $50,000-a-year president of the General Dyestuff Corp., the sales agency for General Aniline & Film, which had been seized as a Nazi asset by the Alien Property Custodian...

Last week, Herberger looked something like deadwood himself. The board got him to kick himself upstairs to chairman. In as president went 54-year-old Bert Prall, Butler's retail boss. Bespectacled, garden-loving Bert Prall was a tougher man than he looked. Before resigning as a Montgomery Ward vice president in 1946, he had stood up for 15 years under Sewell Avery-and had long been manager of hard lines. As boss of money-losing Butler Bros., Prall might find it was still hard lines...
