After intermission, Elliot Forbes, conductor of the Glee Club and Choral Society, conducted a group of Christmas pieces, including a large group of modern works, and ending with three carols by Peter Warlock, whose orchestration sounded like something out of Hollywood. But they were an effective finish to a very enjoyable concert, and sent the audience home cheerful and happy...
...audience, my favorite songs were "Heart" and "Those Were the Good Old Days" which were dished up in uneven helpings, it seemed. "Heart" is pumped a little too much, especially with two reprises in the second act. And Good Old Days," a gruesome duet between the witch and the warlock, is lost in the welter of first act brilliance. Expanding the number and moving it to early after intermission--before Lola begins to soften--would strengthen the whole last half of the show...
...attractive young witch who takes a liking to a publisher (Rex Harrison) living upstairs. Although witches can't love, she casts a semi-permanent spell on him. Miss Holroyd (whose name means "Holy Rood" in archaic English), is just beginning to enjoy life when her witch aunt and her warlock brother arrive to tangle things up. A pathetic little author of witchcraft books is drawn to the apartment and his descriptions of "them" afford some enjoyable snickers...
Fredric March, better than holds up his farcical end. Robert Benchley is still Hollywood's most reliable ban vivant, though Cecil Kellaway, as the alcoholic old warlock, gives him unctuous competition. Veronica Lake, with a voice like a hoarse clarinet, makes a bewitching witch, scarcely taller (5 ft. 2 in.) than the broom she hexes. Rene Clair lets Thome Smith have his amiable way much of the time (good line from Witch Lake: "Ever hear of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire? That was our crowd"). But Clair's shrewish fiancée is a malicious...
...mildly entertaining potful of scraps, Witchcraft would be more impressive had Seabrook, like a conscientious warlock, given it double toil and trouble...
