...would like to thank all of you for the warm reception and many messages of good wishes sent these past two weeks. Though this short time has given me an opportunity to speak directly with only a few of you, it is clear that the Faculty is eager to move forward on the important initiatives already underway, such as the development of the new undergraduate program in general education and implementation of the recommendations of the Task Force on Teaching and Career Development, to name just...
...Remembering the Fallen "One day in Iraq" gave a perfectly pitched and very moving account of the loss felt by families of servicemen killed in action [June 4]. Your insistence on referring to the soldiers' last names in virtually all the accounts, however, was disturbing. Francisco Botta, who distributed the toothpaste for his family's wholesale business in Miami, stocked his warehouse bathroom with the stuff. "I used it every day," he says. "I told everybody to stop...
Only when the band begins to play "Caroline Says II" do Reed and his audience seem to warm up. The highpoint comes towards the end of the show during the inevitable "Walk on the Wild Side." A man sporting a grey beard and a grey suit is dancing blissfully with a beer in his hand. But Reed also manages to thrill the young generation. Twenty-year-old Steffi, wearing a hot pink bob and a red Velvet Underground bag over her shoulder, raves in the foyer: "I was in the front row. I'm still totally euphoric!" For some...
