...Ives made a pretty, witty something of the script. Director Gary Griffin made it sing, sumptuously; Russell Warner touched up the orchestrations to these just-short-of-classic Gershwin songs; and Rob Ashford staged some sublimely silly choreography. (My notes read, "six dancing couples form a giant pretzel," but I may have been hallucinating.) In a nifty cast, I especially liked Felicia Finley, who played Magda the saucy parlormaid. Health economist Kenneth Warner, director of the University of Michigan Tobacco Research Network, remembers when the world thought it was everyone's personal responsibility to cut down on smoking and when the government had little to say on the matter. In many ways, he says, where we are in fighting obesity today is similar to where we were with cigarettes in the early '60s: "We've identified a health-risk factor, but we're only now starting to get serious about conveying its importance and magnitude to the public...

As part of News Corp.'s commitment to the venture, it hired Terenzio to spend a few months a year helping reprogram CCTV-which once railed against "hegemonic powers...

Pentagon spokesman Larry Dirita insisted, "If there is some shortfall in what was provided, it was an oversight." Committee staff members haven't actually counted the pages. Chairman John Warner will investigate this week to see what is missing...

...Despite its combination of beauty and talent, the band didn't prove a hit with Chinese audiences. Their luck changed only after Kazuma Tomoto, a Warner Music executive in Tokyo, saw a 12 Girls Band concert video and decided to import them to Japan. "I'd been thinking that Japan needed a new, energetic sound to jolt it out of its funk," says Tomoto. "The second I saw them, I knew they were going to be huge." His bosses weren't convinced, so Tomoto quit his job and started his own music label. It paid off: Tomoto's Platia Entertainment...
