...scene between a narrator (Dan Rosenthal '02) and Marvin Taylor (Liz Janiak '03), a New York University professor. Taylor makes it easy to laugh at the implications of Wilde's trials, especially given the pretentious delivery that is reminiscent of a bad English lecture. Yet the time warp does not seem out of place in the context of the play, nor is the scene entirely without purpose. Janiak, despite the facade, reminds the audience that homosexuality did not exist as a concept before 1890 and also explains the failure of Wilde as a champion of gay rights...
...TIME WARP AGAIN...
...like a time warp (Rocky Horror Picture Show 25th anniversary!) in the music store this week. On the new releases shelf sits a bizarro collection of performers that seem like a catalogue of my musical consciousness in the past: the Wallflowers, Collective Soul, Slash (recording with his Slash's Snakepit band, not with Guns N' Roses) and Tiffany. Tiffany! I half expected to see a new Wilson Phillips album...
Annan's critics find his outlook naive. Survivor may have shown us the future of TV this summer, but autumn will bring such time-warp fare as a Dynasty-like soap from Aaron Spelling and a remake of The Fugitive (CBS, Fridays, 8 p.m., starts Oct. 6). But the show many advertisers give the best odds is Bette (CBS, Wednesdays, 8 p.m., debuts Oct. 11), a sitcom with brassy Bette Midler--an actual professional entertainer!--playing herself a la The Jack Benny Show. The series has plenty for Midler's fans (yes, she sings), but will Survivor's young viewers swing to this boogie-woogie belter...
