Most of the album's songs, written in the '90s, have a time-warp directness that locates them firmly in Clineland. Barnett climbs inside them all, the jingles and the ballads, with equal agility. But the standouts are the torch songs. The opening cut, Planet of Love, has a blue-eyed bluesy aggressiveness that Barnett builds nicely from a throaty murmur into a dominatrix growl; it's an invitation to a dangerous liaison, delivered deadpan. A Simple I Love You has the same let's-fall-in-love message, this time sung not as a come...
...also cut its annual interest payments by $50 million. Incredibly, the airline only recently converted to computers to set fares and manage its inventory of seats to boost revenues for each flight. Notes Brian Harris, airline industry analyst for Lehman Bros.: "TWA had been operating in a 1970s time warp." This backwardness apparently did not apply to safety and aircraft maintenance. These films were routine but easy to take; they put the fun in perfunctory. ID4 is a big step up, a doomsday fable told at warp speed. The approach of the alien ships is nicely achieved, with ominous shadows creeping across the Apollo 11 monument on the moon, then up the facades of the White House and the Empire State Building. On Earth, an ensemble cast fleshes out the stereotypes (Harvey Fierstein, whiny gay man; Judd Hirsch, crusty old Jew; Vivica Fox, stripper with heart of gold), while the three male leads mine all available righteousness and comic charm. Wryness...
While "Love Story" audience participation does not include black leather attire and "Time Warp" pelvic thrusts, the Crimson Key's ribald remarks about McGraw's hair style and O'Neal's vacuous mannerisms have also hardened into student institutions...
When Louis Gerstner arrived as CEO of IBM nearly three years ago, industry insiders saw the company's also-ran computer-operating system, called OS/2 Warp, as a likely target for the corporate ax. With just 13 million users, far behind Microsoft Windows' 120 million, OS/2 seemed doomed. But instead of killing the project, Gerstner beatified it, assigning the company's top engineers to it and giving V.P. Wally Casey a blank check for development. The results of the effort, code-named Merlin, will begin shipping to beta testers in the next month...
