Even before the meeting, Hungary and Poland joined the list of Soviet satellites stepping into line behind the boycott. That brought the total to ten, including the U.S.S.R. (the others: Bulgaria, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Viet Nam and Laos). Warsaw's decision was especially reluctant-and poignant-because much of the money used to train its teams had been donated by Polish organizations situated abroad, especially in the U.S. Keenly aware of the country's straitened circumstances in the wake of the 1982 military clampdown, the groups wanted to assure a dignified and well-prepared Olympic showing...

...former Solidarity leader was one of tens of thousands of demonstrators who turned out in cities across Poland last week to mock official government ceremonies honoring the international workers' day. Riot squads drenched Solidarity supporters in Warsaw and Czestochowa with water cannons. There were other demonstrations in Szczecin, Lublin, Wroclaw and Poznan. Government Spokesman Jerzy Urban brusquely dismissed the May Day protests as "pitiful" but announced that the police had detained 684 demonstrators for questioning...

...willing last week to face beatings, drenchings and possible arrest had significantly dwindled. But if Walesa and his followers could not hope to prevail against Polish riot squads, they did cause Jaruzelski considerable embarrassment on the eve of his trip to Moscow. As churchgoers streamed out of St. John's Cathedral after a morning Mass in honor of workers, someone in the crowd flung a sheaf of leaflets into the air that urged Poles "to ruin the attempt to make this holiday a show of obedience." Only about 200 youths stood ready to battle the police, who chased them down cobblestoned streets with jets of water. When the protesters tried to regroup outside...

...Soviet maneuvers, like similar ones conducted by the NATO navies a month ago, presupposed that in a NATO-Warsaw Pact conflict, a crucial fighting area would be the Norwegian Sea, between Norway and Iceland. The northern reaches of the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea constitute the Soviet Union's "ocean bastion," where its submarines move freely with their cargo of nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles. To prevent NATO'S killer subs and surface submarine hunters from entering the area during a war, the Soviets figure that they must totally control those waters north of the line stretching...
