...there was??ever a show made to be watched on DVD, it's this one. Experiencing 24's twists and turns all at once makes it easier to sustain the real-time rush (and to notice those convenient jumps between episodes, in which characters make it crosstown in L.A. traffic in five minutes). Season 4 was even more of an implausible thrill ride than usual. But it was the series' best season for raw acting performances, especially Shohreh Aghdashloo's as the hard-bitten-but-sympathetic matriarch of a sleeper-cell family. As agent Jack Bauer, Kiefer Sutherland...

...month ago, Tracy Patterson was??simply a woman with more than her fair share of sickness. With multiple birth defects, chronic pain, asthma and bipolar disorder, Patterson, 35, struggled to get by on $832 a month in disability assistance. But at least one thing in her life was taken care of. California's Medicaid program paid for more than a dozen medications every month. "I always got my meds on time," she says. That changed on Jan. 1, when Medicare's prescription-drug benefit went into effect. Patterson was one of 6.2 million people automatically shifted into the program from...

...when he was??34 years old and had been showing in galleries for about a decade, Richard Tuttle had a major exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. A big show at a New York City museum can be career making. Or it can play out the way his did. Tuttle was working with the humble materials he favors to this day--wire, string, bits of Styrofoam, matches, scraps of plywood and cardboard--which he lightly assembled into strange little delicacies. Some of the works in that show, like his "rope pieces"--three-inch lengths of clothesline, fluffed...

...was??outraged by Michelle Cottle's article, in which she confessed she wasn't much of an environmentalist until now, when she is pregnant [April 18]. What selfishness! Is it all right then to destroy the environment as long as it affects only those who are out of the womb? Preserving the environment has to be humankind's top priority at all times. Conserving what we have requires a careful balancing of benefits and costs, plus modulated change. With allies like Cottle, who needs enemies...

...It was??J. Robert Oppenheimer himself who chose the code name "Trinity" for the 1945 test of the atom bomb he had done so much to create. He would say later that he was inspired by a line from the poet John Donne: "Batter my heart, three-personed God." It was just like Oppenheimer, at a moment of triumph, to lay in a note of anguish. He may have been the physicist who led-- who drove--the scientific crash program at Los Alamos, N.M. But he was not a simple man. It tells you something that his idea...
