Professor Washburn was born in Worcester in 1869; was graduated from Harvard in the class of 1891; and obtained his degree from the Episcopal Theological School in 1894. He studied abroad both at Oxford and at the University of Berlin. He was ordained in 1896, and was successively rector of St. John's Church, Providence, R. I., and of St. Mark's Church, Worcester.
