Green is such a calming color that many school walls are painted "educational green" to reduce the restlessness of students. Now educational green may have to yield to an even more soothing tint: "jailhouse pink." According to Alexander Schauss, director of biosocial research at City College in Tacoma, Wash., the sight of the color pink changes the secretion of hormones, thus reducing aggressiveness. A jail commander in San Jose, Calif., who has tested the theory says it works-for a while. Lieut. Paul Becker found that prisoners were less hostile for the first 15 minutes in a cell that...
...Rifle, Colo., that Caterpillars of the Colony Development Operation have already cut 300 yds. into a mountain of shale. Near by, in another canyon, Union Oil engineers monitor a conveyor belt delivering a stream of shale into a giant funnel. Some 40 miles south, at Logan's Wash, Occidental Petroleum miners have cut two mine faces into the sides of a shale mountain. In others, the yield of shale oil was not as high as expected...

Standing in front of a small group of reporters, Ray announced that she had shut down the Hanford, Wash., radioactive waste dumping site. A spot check of trucks carrying sludge into the state had revealed serious violations of federal regulations on transporting hazardous materials...
...plant "swimming pools," but reactor operators are running out of pool space. Wastes that emit less radioactivity are placed in sealed containers and trucked to dump sites for burial. However, some of the containers have leaked, either underground or in transit, and dump sites have been closed in Hanford, Wash., and Beatty, Nev. This leaves only one dump in the entire country that still accepts nonmilitary atomic trash, and South Carolina Governor Richard Riley has closed that site, at Barnwell, to wastes brought in from out of state...
