...invitation-only indoor events were filled to capacity but proved troublesome in a different way. The Pontiff was repeatedly confronted over his conservative policies. The most dramatic episode took place in Utrecht during a talk by Hedwig Wasser, a middle-aged mother of three, on behalf of the National Council of Missionary Societies. Although the Dutch hierarchy had tried to screen out dissidents who might challenge the Pope, Wasser departed from her text, which had been cleared in advance, to ask John Paul, "Are we preaching the liberating gospel in a credible way . . . if we exclude rather than make room...

THREE HOURS IN LENGTH, director Magaril's production varies widely in quality. The cast seems to walk through certain scenes, such as the mini-climax which occurs when Christine (Debbie Wasser) kills Ezra (Benajah Cobb). The underplayed emotions defuse the scene's potential. Peter Becker, as the chaplain who argues that a war is all right as long as it's a religious war, is very professional and completely winning. Praise must go as well to Michael Allio, Christopher Moore and Deborah Wasser. But without a doubt, the big surprise in this cast is Kattrin, played by the lovely Brigit Fasolino. Her face is just right--a picture of peace, shell-shocked, ravaged, yet innocently eerie. In the very best production of this work, the character of Kattrin has been likened to Aristophanes...

THROUGHOUT Peoploids in Hunger City, the performers throw themselves into their work with enthusiasm no matter what ridiculous things they are requested to do. With straight faces, Debbie Wasser and Ashley Roundtree calmly strip down to silk negligee and fruit-of-the-looms as they sing the melancholy duet "Heroes." Later, Wasser submits to being beaten with a cord with equal aplomb...
