Analysts attending the show set things off by drastically revising their 1984 sales forecasts for home computers, the low-cost, low-power machines. The Yankee Group, a Boston-based industry watcher, slashed its projections for the year from 7.1 million to 4.9 million. Future Computing, the Richardson, Texas, research firm, lowered its estimate from 6.5 million to 5.5 million units. That would be only a 10% increase over last year, good growth for almost any other business but skimpy for an industry in which sales have been doubling and tripling annually. Says Harry Edelson, a technology analyst for the investment...

John Paul now has his own men running all of the key Curial offices. Noting that Cardinal Gantin is the first non-Italian to run the Congregation for Bishops, a progressive Vatican watcher observed, "For the first time, bishops of the world will be chosen without the influence of Italian traditionalism." Perhaps so, but last week's administrative reform was hardly a triumph for liberals. Two prelate's picked for other leading posts were Archbishops Jean Jerome Hamer of Belgium and Augustin Mayer of West Germany. Although Wall Street analysts share Lynch's enthusiasm for the commercial, they do not believe it will help Wendy's bite off a significantly bigger share of the $37 billion fast-food market. Says Joseph Doyle, the fast-food industry watcher for Smith Barney: "What frequently happens with successful ads like this is that people give a life to the expression itself but maybe don't relate it to Wendy's hamburgers." Wendy's is far behind its rivals in number of outlets. It has 2,553 outlets in the U.S., vs. McDonald...

Vertigo takes this Hitchcockian transference of guilt-from criminal to innocent onlooker to movie watcher-one disturbing step further. Scottie Ferguson (Stewart) is another immobilized hero; the former detective's fear of heights had resulted in the death of a policeman. Now an old college chum has put Scottie on the trail of his disturbed wife Madeleine (Kim Novak), who believes herself possessed by the spirit of her suicidal great-great-grandmother. Scottie follows Madeleine up and down the hills of San Francisco, a vertiginous setting where even the streets have lost their balance. At first...

Notes Charles Ferris, a former Federal Communications Commission chairman who is counsel for an electronics-industry lobbying group called the Home Recording Rights Coalition: "The VCR watcher was either unable to watch the show the first time or is watching for the second time. Either way that means an incremental increase in the audience." Such an increase benefits everyone, according to Ferris; a rising tide lifts all boats, even Hollywood yachts. -By Richard Stengel...
