...barnyard symphonette. The Hummer and the Time Beater serve as the rhythm section; the Cellophane Crinkler and the Program Rattler handle the solos. In the percussion section, the principal performers are the Bracelet Jangler and the Premature Clapper, while special effects are contributed by the Knuckle Cracker and the Watch Wind er. The Coughers' Chorale is directed by the Dry-Throated, Red-Nosed Hacker, whose feeblest lead always gets a resounding antiphonal response. The entire performance is choreographed by Fidgeter, produced and upstaged by that notorious team of Latecomer and Earlyleaver...
...Carolina hillside, Payne set out the bodies of piglets that had been still-born or accidentally crushed by their mothers. One group of cadavers was carefully screened and the other protected against animal scavengers but fully exposed to insect invasion. Then the patient entomologist settled down for a decomposition watch. Within five minutes, the first flesh-eating flies arrived to begin feeding on the unscreened piglets. During the next few weeks, 522 species of tiny morticians -most of them insects-arrived to join the feast. Among them, Payne identified "3 phyla, 9 classes, 31 orders, 151 families and 359 genera...
Something Unseen. The exultant climax came two days later when 500,000 cheering Cubans crowded into the Plaza to watch Latin America's biggest military machine pass in review before Castro, President Osvaldo Dorticós, and Cuba's other commissars. While MIGs screamed overhead, Fidel's Communist-trained troops, cadets and members of the civilian Popular Defense Force clicked smartly past, followed by armored troop carriers, tanks, rocket launchers and a flock of missiles. "There is something else that is not seen," Castro told the crowd jubilantly, "and that is many weapons more. The quantity...
...CRIMSON, Harvard's own Dwight Macdonald, rarely reviews television series. Perhaps, out of deference to the Lampoon, we should have watched The Munsters, but we never cared for Yvonne deCarlo. Speaking of television, we think of escape, and our first thoughts must turn to Bogart. Everyone knows how and where Bogey was revived, but last year, we witnessed the resurrection of another escape. Literally dusting off an old can of film, the Brattle lifted "The Batman" out of a celluloid cemetery. Shortly thereafter, someone in film-land (who undoubtedly had read the Time article about camp) spliced this 1943 serial...
Supposedly a great deal of money was spent in preparing this series. If this is true, then certainly much was doled out to script writers. You'll have to watch to really get into the mode, but the lines are spoken almost as if they were still within the white balloons. Impossible speeches like Robin's "Holy ashtray!!!" and his mentor's "You've done it again, chum," should not come off, but undeniably, they do. Credit must be given to West and Ward, but some mention should be made of the superb direction. Someone must have read...
