...last year, with the failure of the relatively small Pro-SWIFT. Pro-SWIFT had an imprudently large fraction of its assets invested in a single Georgia wind farm, which was forced to shut down for two weeks over protests that its turbines were killing large numbers of local waterfowl. The resulting revenue loss forced Pro-SWIFT to sell assets in an effort to service its maturing short-term debt. Although only $10 billion of assets were liquidated, they fetched just 60 cents per dollar of book value. J.P. Morgan, in purchasing the assets, noted that, “Our more...
...Other states are trying to protect hunters from different forms of harassment. A Virginia bill aimed at keeping activists from strategically (and sometimes dangerously) using food to interfere with waterfowl hunting is set to become law on April 13. In that state, it's illegal to lure birds with bait, and there have been reports of activists littering hunting spots with food - sometimes from boats in front of shooters' blinds - so that any birds that showed up would be off-limits. ...federal Fish and Wildlife Service banned lead ammo in waterfowl hunting - that of ducks and other birds that live on water - which, according to a FWS spokesperson, led to an estimated 64% reduction of lead poisoning in ducks on certain parts of the Mississippi. The most recent comprehensive state ban began on March 1 in Missouri, where state officials realized lead buckshot was harming populations of mourning doves, turkeys, quail, shorebirds and raptors. Several other states, including Washington, Arizona, Texas, Ilinois and Virginia, are also considering lead bans...
...Hunting is not the only sporting activity that's going unleaded: in 2004, the Adirondack Cooperative Loon Program successfully lobbied New York State to ban the sale of small lead fishing weights after studies showed ducks, loons, and other waterfowl were mistakenly filling their gizzards with lethal lead sinkers. Other anti-lead fishing regulations are also in place in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont...
