Perhaps, you say, it would be better to be a Lindsay, who seems perfectly content spending her days oblivious to complication—going shopping and making hot ham water. But I don’t so much have the clothes or the hair to pull that off. And being married to Tobias could get a little awkies. Or maybe a Lucille or George Sr., who can simply will (or hire a one-armed man to help coerce) what they want done. Seems to work out fairly well for them, but I guess I’m still a little...
...foot as well. Karlan and her companions had been staying in the indigenous village of Otavalo working with local children as part of the humanitarian group Village Education Project. Her mother said that the trip was originally planned as a day hike, so the group had not brought much water or food. She said that her daughter had been traveling with fellow students each weekend. After talking to her daughter earlier this evening, Karlan's mother said that "[Jocelyn] is extraordinarily resilient and always has been." ...goes through a hole in a crumbling concrete wall and down a flight of stairs covered in a slippery layer of mold. At the bottom lies a dimly lit room that houses roughly 100 people. Meanwhile, the story spread over the Internet like an oil spill, giving lots of people a queasy feeling. (Read about the coming battle for the resources of the Arctic...
While Alaskans may find the algal blob unusual if not frightening, scientists say they are nothing new in Arctic Ocean waters, though the blob itself might be a little weird. Brenda Konar, a marine biology professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, says algal outbreaks can and do occur even in icy Arctic waters. It just takes the right combination of nutrients, light and water temperature, she says. "Algae blooms," she says. "It's sort of like a swimming pool that hasn't been cleaned in a while." The blob, Konar says, is a microalgae made up of "billions...
