...Break. At 1 a. m. one night last week the St. Francis dam broke at each end, although the centre section (200 ft. high) held fast. Twelve billion gallons of water in the form of a wave 75 ft. high went charging down the San Francisquito Canyon, into the Santa Clara River. By the time it reached the Pacific Ocean, 75 miles away, it was little more than a malicious trickle. But behind were the wiped-out towns of Newhall, Saugus, Piru, Fillmore, Santa Paula; 305 dead humans, thousands of dead animals; little white flags designating corpses found by rescue...

...life I saw the pictured face of Eugene O'Neill: on my writing table was a . . . portrait of Andreyev. I placed my hand over the lower part of O'Neill's face, and our Leonid's eyes confronted me, his fine brow and wave of dark hair (tidier, though). Despite its brevity, the life line of the lightning flash has been accurately measured by the cathode ray oscillograph. This is an instrument developed by the General Electric Company at Schenectady and makes use of a beam of electrons which, acting as a pointer, measures- the rise & fall, or wave shape of the voltages. When a wave of lightning encounters an obstruction it builds up to twice its power, just as a wave of water breaking on a wall will splash about twice its height. Therefore a direct voltage of 3,000,000 traveling along a line will suddenly jump...

...shocks were the first ones of distinct strength recorded in the seismograph in recent weeks. The needle began to record its jagged lines about 12.30 o'clock, and for two hours its agitation continued. Three main wave trains shook the shaft that penetrates the earth many feet below the recording instruments. The first one was written-out a few minutes after 1 o'clock, and the others followed during the next ten minutes. At a late hour yesterday afternoon the disturbances had not been definitely placed...

...frowns. Let us shake our heads and hold up a finger pregnant with remonstrance. Where is the American Flag in Cambridge? Plainly and simply-nowhere. Hardly the embers of patriotism glow in its frigid bosom. To be specific. Did the Flag, the Stars and Stripes of the American Republic, wave over University Hall on February 22 last? Yes, it did wave from two o'clock in the afternoon until six P. M. A feeble display of the ritual was carried out without that deep sincerity which should have had the flag out and flying at least a week before...
