...different was the war experience of Chile. Her big exports were nitrates (essential for explosives) and copper, another important war necessity. After the first disruption of the War gave her a bad setback in the fall of 1914, she rode on the crest of the wave. Her Government, which depended largely on export duties, was flush. Her mines prospered. Her export balance, which amounted to $300,000,000 in 1913, jumped to over $1,500,000,000 in 1917. In the four years of the War her export balances reached...

...Using the terms "All-Wave," "World-Wave," "World-Wide-Wave," to describe sets "not constructed to receive . . . with reasonable or adequate consistency, the entire spectrum of radio frequencies in recognized use in the art. ..." Lawful designation: "Limited All-Wave," etc., with the exact wave bands or frequencies clearly stated...

...Baldwin, Long Island, gathered engineers of Newark's publicity-wise Station WOR, good-natured Curator Clyde Fisher of Manhattan's Hayden Planetarium, newshawks, photographers, announcers standing by to tell all. Before sending their signal, the engineers spent forty-five minutes twirling the knobs of 40 short-wave receivers, trying to catch a signal from Mars, where the highest form of life is generally believed to be some low form of vegetation, possibly resembling moss. Result: a potpourri of short-wave noises, most of them promptly identified...

Last week celebrations all over Spain reminded Spaniards that three years had passed since General Franco flew from the Canary Islands to Morocco to launch the Civil War. The anniversary of the revolt was a bright, cool day that ended a heat wave. At the lunch hour, factory workers listened to the reading of decrees announcing a "fiesta for the exaltation of labor" and promising wages high enough to give the "humble classes" access to culture. All over Spain there were prayers and parades, masses and mass meetings, chants and cheers for Francisco Franco; all over Spain there were uniforms...

Frequency modulation can be described as changing the length of the radio wave. Amplitude modulation changes the wave's strength. Interference noises can simulate amplitude modulation and therefore disturb signals broadcast by this system, but they do not simulate frequency modulation. Thus frequency-modulated signals skip neatly past the interference, whether lightning bolt or icebox motor. One catch is that ultrashort wave length of limited range must be used...
