Airman Recruit Paul A. Trerice, 21, was no stranger to naval correctional practices. He had been busted once on a minor drug charge and again after being caught off limits with a WAVE in her barracks. Early last month while shipmates enjoyed liberty in Hong Kong, he was confined to the CCU for falling asleep while on duty. But Trerice was not responding to treatment. After two unauthorized absences from the ship, he was placed in the brig. On April 14, Trerice refused to complete an exercise session for CCU inmates. According to some accounts, he asked to report...

Navy officials had already begun a study, which they were soon forced to broaden. Word of the Trerice death had produced a tidal wave of tales of naval abuse. Ex-Ranger Crewman Neil Hodgson, 18, of Detroit, claimed that a beating in the ship's CCU left him with a ruptured eardrum. Fellow Veteran Steve Richards, 27, also of Detroit, said he received a 13-stitch leg wound there. The two joined another pair of Ranger sailors in suing the Navy for brutality and violation of their rights. A third suit may be filed by the Rev. Robert Mercer...

...Berlin election did not produce a clear-cut victor. The Christian Democratic Union (C.D.U.) garnered 47.9% of the vote, its best showing ever, but the party still fell short of a majority. The biggest winner in this disillusioned city of 2 million, beset by youth protest and a wave of squatters taking over vacant buildings, was the Alternative List: a motley array of leftists, environmentalists, pacifists and others who reject all aspects of West German society. Using the symbol of a green hedgehog, this irreverent protest group polled 7.2%, and for the first time gained representation in the city parliament...

...Pope's voluble remonstrances on the issue (though he has been careful not to refer to the referendums themselves) have incited a wave of criticism from pro-choice advocates. Bettino Craxi, head of the Italian Socialist Party, charges that John Paul is leading a "revival of intolerance, improper interference and excessive zeal on the part of the Roman Catholic Church over the abortion issue...

Evidence of the volcano's power remains abundant. The high slopes are still covered with tree trunks, some more than 400 years old, some a mere seven, their roots pointing back toward the source of the shock wave that flattened them. Just below the mountain stands Coldwater Lake. A year ago, it was the highly scenic source of a creek that fed the Toutle River. Now the valley through which the Toutle flowed is blocked by a 600-ft.-tall wall of volcanic mud and debris. The lake has been slowly filling with dirty water, threatening to overflow eventually...
