Gulval, near Penzance, the Worshipful Company of Mead Makers paraded to the Gulval parish church, where a cup of mead was solemnly blessed. The mead had previously received the blessing of the British Board of Trade, which in its own quaint way hopes that mead exports will help earn a few of the dollars Britain needs (see INTERNATIONAL...
...landscapists whose work changes not a whit from year to year: Dean Fausett (TIME, Aug. 22) and Luigi Lucioni. Their crisp, slick pictures of red barns, cows, birches and green pastures were echoed with varying success from wall to wall, making an exhibition steeped in milk and spinach, the way the customers liked it. (The exhibiting artists sold $10,000 worth of pictures at last year's show, might do as well this time...
Such modest conservatives, entrenched in their green hills, might hold off the moderns indefinitely. They hope to do more than that: to create a summer center as renowned in art as the Berkshires' Tanglewood festival is in music. At Forest Hills last week, the Aussies took the doubles (with Bromwich and 29-year-old Billy Sidwell as heroes), but the U.S.'s Ted Schroeder and Pancho Gonzales trod the challengers down under in the singles to keep the cup, 4-1. Australia's consolation...
...Articles on bee hunting, says he, have one thing in common: "They are written by men who never possibly could have found a bee tree, at least by pursuing the methods they describe." Sample fallacies: a handkerchief soaked in anise will induce bees to point the way to their hive (actually they will shun the lure); a "beeline" home is straight (it is really erratic because "no two bees have exactly the same idea as to the best way home...
