...white and black Hemings branches are embracing, making plans to hold a joint family reunion. They've been received less warmly by the Monticello Association, the organization of descendants of Jefferson's white daughters. For years they asserted the Hemings children were sired by one of Jefferson's wayward nephews. Now that the DNA tests have eliminated that possibility, they are suggesting there were other male Jeffersons who could have fathered Hemings' children. Jefferson biographer Joseph Ellis discounts this, saying circumstances bolster Madison's link to Jefferson and even call into question the nullification of the Thomas lineage...
Doctors used to think eating disorders were purely psychological. Now they realize there's some wayward biology as well. In a study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry this month, researchers found abnormal levels of serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain, in women who had been free of bulimia for at least a year. That may help explain why drugs like Prozac and Zoloft, which affect serotonin, have allowed a lot of bulimics to stop bingeing. Unfortunately, the pills don't work as well for anorexia. Nor do they offer a simple one-stop cure. Health-care workers must...
More than any other Cirque show, O incorporates these acts into its expansive design. A quartet of carousel horses canters through the air. Angels, hunchbacks, giant toucans materialize as cameo apparitions. Anything may navigate the pool: a bathtub, a giant inverted umbrella, a wayward iceberg, a shark fin that turns out to be the top of a crescent moon. At the end the hunchback plays a grand piano as the princess reclines on it--art, love and beauty in one heartbreaking image--and then, slowly, it dissolves into the water. Here and throughout, O achieves a goal of the highest...
...Could outright absolution be next? There's no sign yet that Mrs. Clinton plans to publicly forgive her wayward spouse, but there's little doubt in the White House that public absolution from her would be the ultimate weapon: Hillary has forgiven him, the spin would go -- once again -- so why can't Congress? Now would be a good time to strike, with polls showing growing public disquiet over the House's handling of possible impeachment hearings. Expect more attacks from the First Lady soon; she's not one to be passive with her tenure at stake. If her husband...
...looks as if the show may go on. With a clever bit of detective work, technical ingenuity and the aid of giant radio telescopes, scientists at ESA and NASA (co-sponsors of SOHO) have located the wayward spacecraft and started nursing it back to health; they hope to regain control of it this week. If all goes well, SOHO could be fully back in business this fall in plenty of time to monitor the sun as it approaches the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity, around...
