...Democratic aides tell TIME that minority whip Dick Durbin of Illinois plans to lead a filibuster this week. These sources say that with a handful of conservative Republicans--including New Hampshire's John Sununu and Idaho's Larry Craig--opposing the bill, Democrats are willing to risk looking weak on national security in the hopes of delivering a win that could help mobilize their base in 2006. Meanwhile, G.O.P. strategists think they will benefit from what they say is yet another political blunder by the party that resisted creating the Homeland Security department before the 2002 elections. Said Republican National...

Stroman's transfer of her direction of Mel Brooks' Broadway musical about a lunatic producer (Lane) and a neurotic one (Broderick) trying to put on a musical so bad it will be a flop is quite literal and jolly. There's no attempt to address the show's endemic weak spots--a slow start and a contrived end. Mostly Stroman just lets it rip. But in some respects the movie is an improvement on the show. ...blathering about being misled into war matters at all. What really counts is what would happen if we left Iraq before the new government was ready to take over all the duties we now perform. Would the Middle East situation worsen or not? Would the U.S. be seen as weak and thereby become more vulnerable to attack both at home and abroad? We must see our mission through in Iraq. And I say this as a father whose son will be entering the Army in 2007 and could go to Iraq before the war is over. We are making progress...

...brilliance and innovation of the interpretation by director and set designer Burkle triumphs over the occasionally weak acting. The haunting red umbrellas take Ioensco’s rhinoceroses beyond the absurd and into the surreal; the HRDC production transcends a mere illustration of the script and creates a work of art in its own right...
