...Cape Fear, written by James R. Webb and directed by J. Lee Thompson, Robert Mitchum played Cady, and much of the movie's repellent jolt came from his look and bulk. Lounging on a street corner with his X-rated face, smirking at the fragile innocence of the lawyer's young daughter, he was a case study of "lewd vagrancy." Leaning his bare-barrel torso into a cringing Polly Bergen (the lawyer's wife), cracking a raw egg in the air and then wiping the semen-like yolk from her shoulders and breasts, caressing her, undressing her with his syrupy...
...Susan Webb runs a consulting firm in Seattle that helps companies educate their employees about the issue of harassment. She says men almost always greet her with derision. "So now we're going to find out how to do it" is one reaction. Or, "I've been trying for years to get someone to sexually harass me." Says Webb: "The laughing is not because they are mean or bad, but because they really don't understand it." Part of what fuels the initial jokes, says Webb, is the fear of being blamed for or embarrassed about sexual harassment...
...Wanda Webb Holloway may be the ultimate stage mother. Last week a Houston jury found the 37-year-old suburban housewife guilty of concocting a bizarre scheme to assure her daughter Shanna a place on the high school freshman cheerleading squad by killing the mother of her chief rival, Amber Heath. With flawed but cold-blooded logic, Holloway concluded that Amber would be too distraught over her mother's death to compete against Shanna for the coveted position...
...Espy, cutting patterns in the air with powerful hands. "Blacks turned to the North and West for promises that were largely unfulfilled. They are coming home." The mayor's brother, Mike Espy, is Congressman for 22 counties in the heart of the Delta. He was elected in 1986 -- over Webb Franklin, a white lawyer -- with the support of only 15% of the white voters. Last year he got 70% of the white vote...
...contrary to reactionary-generated, media-propagated popular beliefs, Selvaratnam is not representative of some insidious, speech-suppressing PC movement supposedly sweeping through the Kremlin on the Charles. Conversely, Webb is not representative of some insidious, speech-suppressing anti-PC movement. Selvaratnam and Webb are extremists. They represent no one but themselves. Reasonable conservatives (It's true! They exist! And we admit it!) do not automatically dismiss opposing positions as mere "PC bullshit" without giving them a fair hearing. Reasonable liberals do not throw around irresponsible, trumped-up charges of racism, sexism, homophobia, "ageism," "ableism," imperialism, militarism, "Eurocentrism" or "phallocentrism...
