...side, senior captain Joe Bradley made the Ivy League Honor Roll with a solid performance in the Kenney, Webber and Lowell Cup over the weekend. The Irish midfielder was selected to the all-tournament team on the strength of his good play on both sides of the ball during the Crimson's 2-0 win over Hartford and its 1-0 loss to Vermont...

...This is an industry in which weird stuff happens," says Paine Webber analyst Alan Gottesman. Weirdness is fine. There are plenty of goofy-sounding new cable channels in the works -- a channel devoted entirely to food, another devoted entirely to golf -- but at least behind those are single-minded individuals pursuing their dreams of having more shows about pesto and four- irons on TV. The broadcast networks' proposed channels, to the contrary, are not being launched mainly out of Ted Turnerian visionary determination, but defensively, hastily, by default...

Britain's royal family ventures out to the occasional James Bond movie or Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, but rarely has it taken as keen an interest in culture as it has in Alan Bennett's drama The Madness of George III. Based on the actual derangement of the King who lost the American colonies, the play begins an East Coast tour this week in its Royal National Theatre production. An operatic reading does no disservice to Billy Wilder's film noir, which has been preserved more than adapted. The climax, when the fallen star Norma Desmond shoots her lover and he tumbles into a swimming pool, has opera's larger-than-life emotion. So does the denouement, as she lapses into madness and announces, to a Cecil B. DeMille visible only to her, that she is ready for her close...

Even so, Lloyd Webber's creation is probably better than the ponderous London performance. Director Trevor Nunn excels at narrative clarity, which is present in the original, but not at nuancing characters, which is sorely needed with such miscast stars. As Norma, renowned for delicate beauty, Patti LuPone is too tempestuous, too earthy and too coarse of feature, especially her aardvark nose. As her lover, Kevin Anderson looks pudding-faced and pudgy, so long gone to seed that the supposedly vast age difference disappears -- until the finale, when LuPone inexplicably appears 20 years older than she was moments before. While...
