...each weekday morning, the asphalt playground of Franklin Elementary School in Oakland swarms with some 900 boys and girls shooting baskets, playing tetherball and skipping rope. This large number of children are not at Franklin for a summer recreation outing. ...years of second-class media citizenship, radio has never lost its fervent champions. "We take radio for granted, but it's in our cars, our kitchens, our bedrooms," says Charles Osgood, the CBS Sunday-night TV anchor who also does wry, and often rhyming, commentaries on CBS radio each weekday morning. The Register, by contrast, has upped its circulation since 1979 by 36%, to 274,000. The competition grew keener last spring, when the Register won a Pulitzer for its photographic coverage of the Los Angeles Olympics. "We're certainly feeling their heat," admits Los Angeles...

...Every weekday for more than eight months now, through winter freeze and summer swelter, scores of Americans, black and white, have been assembling in front of the large, sand-colored South African embassy on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington to demonstrate their revulsion from apartheid. Every weekday for those eight months, some of the protesters have been arrested. Through last week, Washington police had detained nearly 3,000 antiapartheid demonstrators; in virtually all the cases, they were quickly freed after posting $50 bail, and none were prosecuted. Among those arrested since last November are 22 Congressmen, former First Daughter Amy Carter...
