Manhattan's Kidder, Peabody & Co. this week gave parents a Christmas tip: give the kiddies investment trust shares that can "grow with the years." For gifts of $100 in mutual fund shares, Kidder, Peabody would furnish a green-edged gift certificate listing the shares purchased. The firm reminded parents such shares yield from 3½% to 6%, hinted there was no reason to limit purchases to $100: gifts up to $3,000 are exempt from gift taxes...
...Hiram Parke's party were such art patrons as Gypsy Rose Lee, Actress Madeleine Carroll, and International Business Machines' Chairman Thomas J. Watson. Last week many of the guests returned for the first sale in Parke-Bernet's new auction room (seating capacity 600). Up on the stage went 61 paintings by Rubens, Romney, Hobbema and others; when the hammer fell on the last of them, a total of $46,690 had been paid out. On succeeding days there were sales of jewelry once worn by James B. ("Diamond Jim") Brady, paintings and sculpture collected by Cinema...
Ulcers and high blood pressure are popularly supposed to be the chief occupational diseases of U.S. business executives. Last week, at a meeting of Chicago's Industrial Relations Association, Dr. David Slight, Illinois state psychiatrist and onetime University of Chicago professor, told why. A generation or two ago, said he, the successful executive, like as not, was a roaring, highhanded type who grabbed what he wanted and didn't worry about shoving other people around in the process. But the 1949 executive, said Dr. Slight, feels bound by the new labor-management gospel to watch his step...
With its low-slung, "step-down" car, Hudson Motor Car Co. had been competing with Buick, Oldsmobile and De Soto. This week, Hudson unveiled a smaller, cheaper car to compete with Pontiac and Dodge. The new Pacemaker looks like current Hudsons, but has a shorter wheelbase (119 in. v. the Super-Six's 124), a shorter hood, smaller engine (112 h.p., six-cylinder), and a lower ($240 to $265) price. It ranges from $1,675 f.o.b. Detroit for the three-passenger coupé to $1,795 for the four-door sedan...
Eastman Kodak Co. last week announced a "wage dividend" for its 48,000 employees of $15,500,000, biggest in the 38-year-old history of Eastman's profit-sharing plan (last year's bonus: $13 million). Though Eastman's earnings for the first nine months this year were down about 17% from 1948, it's common, stock dividend was higher ($1.70 v. $1.60 last year). Therefore, the bonus, based on the dividend paid to stockholders, was higher also. Paid to everyone employed before last October, the bonus consists of $25 for every $1,000 earned...
