Political sources tell TIME that one-time Connecticut senator and governor Lowell Weicker is seeking a wealthy running mate to help finance a presidential bid. His choice will likely be B.T. Golisano, president and CEO of Paychex Inc., a Rochester payroll servicing company. If Weicker and Golisano reach an agreement, they would immediately commence petition drives to get on state ballots. Weicker, who was a maverick in the Republican party while in the Senate, became Connecticut's first independent governor in 1990. Golisano ran unsuccessfully in New York's 1994 gubernatorial race as a third-party candidate. TIME sources...
Perot says he hopes that the party's nominee will be a fresh face. High on his wish list are David Boren of Oklahoma and Lowell Weicker of Connecticut, both of whom served as Governor and Senator; former Missouri Senator John Danforth; and retiring Senator Sam Nunn of Georgia. But anyone the party chooses will face spending limits, unless it is Perot, who by law can spend all he pleases on his own candidacy. That may be enough to decide who gets the Reform Party nod when it holds its convention in late summer. Don't be surprised...
...G.O.P. fare has fizzled. One faction of the group, led by former Massachusetts Senator Paul Tsongas, produced a fiscally conservative, socially liberal manifesto but recoiled at the idea of backing an independent candidate. Retiring New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley declined to endorse the program, and former Connecticut Governor Lowell Weicker rebelled at the idea of abandoning a third party. Some think Weicker may now try to hook up with Ross Perot's new party. But the chemistry between the two men is bad, and the most likely outcome is a second run by Perot...
...just idle chatter, since the group includes three people who have considered or still are considering mounting such a bid: Democratic Senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey; Lowell Weicker, the former Republican Senator and Independent Governor of Connecticut; and former Massachusetts Senator Paul Tsongas, who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992. The other confederates are Dick Lamm, the former Democratic Governor of Colorado; former Minnesota Representative Tim Penny (a budget-cutting Democrat); the current Governor of Maine, Angus King, an Independent; and former Democratic Senator Gary Hart of Colorado. The meetings are so sensitive that Lamm, their...
...comes the hard part: deciding who, if any of them, will run. Bradley is the likeliest, having recently tested the waters with a campaign-style swing through California. But it created barely a ripple, and lately Bradley has refused to describe himself as a potential candidate. Weicker says he hasn't ruled out a run, but says he likes his new private life as an author and consultant and thinks Bradley would be "perfect." Tsongas has been speaking around the country for his anti-budget deficit Concord Coalition, but says his recurrent bouts with lymphoma have all but disqualified...
