George Hicks makes a round of cruel and senseless comments about the homeless in Harvard Square. Beyond his ignorance on homelessness (which I won't address here), his contempt for obese people is downright disturbing. Hicks comfortably uses this woman's weight as a point of ridicule and a "fact" to disqualify her neediness. Hicks' snide confusion over an "obese beggar" demonstrates total ignorance about the nature of obesity and poverty. Hicks (an economics concentrator) is "missing something here." It's more expensive to be thin than fat in America today...

...that draws 3,000 souls to its weekend services. Within a hundred miles are scores of monasteries, seminaries and altars. Despite 50 years of the most violent scrubbing, religion still coats China with an ancient varnish. And as the nation's core ideology of Marxism-Leninism cracks under the weight of the 20th century, the pope of Marxism is no longer a man controlling a monopoly. China's rickety economy and its opaque, chilly leaders have left most Chinese looking for something, someone, to believe in. ...less extreme statement of the principle that performance should be valued over potential is sound, but Lemann's statement that this principle is blatantly violated in today's America is not entirely convincing. Certainly, higher education is strongly linked to money and power and an impressive college credential carries weight. But Americans rarely work at the same job their entire lives these days. ...high school can appreciate. Sprinkle in a cyber-romance, a couple of tequila shots and a big handful of bra-strap headbands, and you've got a movie. But this movie is also a crash-course in teen angst, dealing with issues of deadbeat dads, cancer-fighting moms, weight problems and basically any other issue that can currently be seen on any late-night Lifetime movie. And, like any self-respecting teensploitation movie, the soundtrack is righteous--a noble dance version of Backstreet Boys "I Want it that Way" actually steals the show at several key party scenes. But--alas...
