...Beneath their fine, carbon-fiber exteriors, the two cars employ different methods of sucking power and speed out of batteries. Tesla's Energy Storage System utilizes several thousand lithium-ion cells, which, due to their high energy density, exceptional energy-to-weight ratio and capacity for hundreds of charge and discharge cycles, are increasingly one of the most popular types of battery. The Lightning, on the other hand, has benefited from the wonders of nanotechnology. Its 30 batteries are made of lithium-titanate nanoparticles, a development from the conventional lithium-ion cell; they boast a range of over 185 miles...

Obesity experts agree that daily exercise is essential for good health, but whether it can successfully lead to long-term weight loss is a question of much debate. What has become increasingly clear, however, is that the conventionally accepted advice - 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity most days of the week - is probably insufficient to spur any real change in a person's body weight. A study published July 28 in the Archives of Internal Medicine adds to the burgeoning scientific consensus: when it comes to exercise for weight loss, more is better. It suggests that obese people would have...

...study, led by John Jakicic at the Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh, followed nearly 200 overweight or obese women ages 21 to 45 through a two-year weight-loss program. The women were given free treadmills to use at home, regular group meetings and telephone pep talks to help keep them on track. Participants were also asked to restrict their food intake to between 1,200 and 1,500 calories per day, and were randomized to one of four physical activity intervention groups based on energy expenditure (either 1,000 calories...

...study tracked nearly 1,700 overweight or obese adults across the country who were at least 25 years old. Men and women were included, and 44% of the group was African American. All participants were encouraged to use such weight-loss maintenance strategies as calorie restriction, weekly group sessions and moderately intensive exercise as well as to keep a food journal. The senior investigator, Victor Stevens of Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore., told me that "hands down, the most successful weight-loss method was keeping a record of what you eat." In the six-month study...

...While Matt Norman says he loves and respects Smith and Carlos, "they don't seem to stand up for anything but themselves. I think they still comment on injustices, but they don't put any weight behind it. If I had done something that made me such a massive part of history, I would want to make it my life. I haven't seen any extra demonstration or extra effort going into solving human and civil rights issues in other countries." The inside story of the salute is gripping; behind the scenes of Salute is quite a tale...
