Baseball is on top now among competitive sports. Basketball is ugly. Hockey is merely cool, and football is weird. ...this pressure that McGwire is trying to avoid; at one point, he threatened to shut down the batting-practice show. The fanaticism is so intense, and even weird, that a fan wrote to the Cardinals asking for an old McGwire bat so he could use it as a wooden leg. Recently, when getting beer for his buddies, McGwire returned to his car to see people leaving their cars and slowly walking to him with pens outstretched. He described the scene to comedian Mark Pitta as The Night of the Living Dead. So McGwire wants to separate himself from the sideshow...

Another approach is Disney's Internet Guide, a preselected list of family-safe websites similar to Yahoo's Yahooligans. Since the pool of acceptable sites is limited, surfing here is a bit like going to the children's library. It also suffers from weird glitches. In testing, every time I typed in a potentially objectionable word, it retrieved a transcript of a (tame) interview between two of my favorite writers, Martin Amis and Will Self. That's a bug I could live with...
