...would you like to fall down a tunnel, land inside actor John Malkovich's body for 15 minutes, then be dumped next to the New Jersey Turnpike--all for $200 (tolls included). That's the weird, beguiling premise of writer Charlie Kaufman's absurdist romance. Jonze, a music-video whiz and an actor (Three Kings), has the vexing habit of forcing his attractive stars (John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, Catherine Keener) to deliver their big scenes through clumps of matted hair. But he keeps the wheels spinning on this funny-peculiar story of people so desperate that they would...

...amid spoken commentary in "My Own God," "Love Is a Muscle" and "Lie of the Land" will elicit either sympathy or smirks, depending on your circle. Heck, how else should you react to words like "kill all the stupid people" or "underarm deodorant spray?" The tonal effects are occasionally weird, but most have been done, like the pseudo-chorale in "Build a Machine." Take it tongue in cheek...

...opening of Princess Mononoke, for example, Ashitaka, the future leader of an Emishi village, defends his village from a Tartari Gemi, an enormous creature covered with snakelike tentacles that destroys everything in its path. No creature shop in Hollywood today could create a Tartari Gemi as convincingly weird as that drawn by Shinji Otsuka, Hiroshi Shimizu, and the other animators. To hear a low, gravelly human voice issue from the monster is almost as frighteningly intriguing as his words: "Filthy humans. Know my pain and hatred...

...entirely believable, sounding in turn appropriately brave, vulnerable, and kind. Gillian Anderson's voice is altered here, designed to sound more godlike (the effect succeeds). Her growling tones are menacing and eerie, and her Moro is as intelligently complex as many of the human characters. Others, however, are slightly weird--particularly Minnie Driver's voice-over as Lady Eboshi. Driver's Eboshi is commanding, complex, and fascinating. She delivers her lines with such complete conviction it is hard to believe that the celluloid Eboshi has no voice of her own. But strangely, Driver's voice is obviously British, and Lady...
