Four sets of eight-oared sweeps are being built for the Newell and Weld boat clubs, by J. F. Donahue, who made the oars for the University crew last year. An eight-oared shell for the Weld boat club, and a light pair oar for the University boat club are being made by H. W. Davy of Cambridge. The old boats this winter have been repaired and have had new covers put on them. About 95 candidates for the Freshman crew began work in the University boat house yesterday afternoon. Thirty five men reported for the Weld crews and about sixty for the Newell. The men were coached individually and in eights on the rowing machines by R. S. Francis '02, E. E. Smith '02 and H. Bullard '02, and afterwards were given exercise with chest weights.
