First Weld caught the water first, and, rowing a faster stroke than the others, drew quickly ahead. Scarcely 100 yards had been covered when number four in First Newell lost control of his oar for several strokes. After this accident the crew got together well and rowed an excellent race. Although still behind First Weld at Harvard bridge, they were rowing strongly, and when they were through the bridge they pulled up gradually on the leaders and forged ahead...
