...What would you consider her trademark looks? I think there are a couple. I think sleeveless sheaths are one. Cardigans are another. I think she does a lot of belted looks. I think she does a lot of statement jewelry ... one or two pieces, well-chosen, bold, big. I think the empire waistline is probably one of her favorite silhouettes. I think those are the biggest. There are other things that she has done consistently. She wears a lot of pearls, double-stranded pearls. She certainly did for her official White House portrait...
What makes Glee more than sketch comedy, and what may save its commercial appeal, is that it is also an underdog story (not just about the kids but also idealistic music-lover Will) with heart. Like Ugly Betty's, its spoofing is bright, not dark. And with a well-chosen sound track and arch comedy, the pilot is just a giant basket of happy. If Murphy can flesh out the overly broad characters, this series could be a rare, sophisticated, joyous hybrid that gets to have its pop candy and satirize it too. As Randy Jackson might say, Glee...

And each house has a story to tell: one was a former artist's atelier; another used to be a geisha...

And fake in that it's proof that a beautiful shot and a well-chosen sound track can imitate emotion in even the most banal scene...
...generally well-played and is beautifully photographed in a low-key burnished light by Robert Elswit, who just won an Oscar for There Will be Blood. This cram-it-all-in manner is particularly surprising given that the film is obviously a labor of love for Mamet, who tells us in a director's statement that he has spent something like five years learning jiu-jitsu and is passionately committed to the values it represents and promotes. I also missed the hard wit of the language we associate with Mamet - funny, cynical, laced with well-chosen obscenities. It's almost...
