...than 300 accomplished blacks from all fields and 100 important black institutions and organizations; therefore I find it odd that your review focused instead on my physical features. Your piece reflects the level of discomfort that many whites and some blacks feel when they discover that well-educated and well-to-do blacks have existed in the U.S. since the late 1800s. Your approach to black history (cover stories on hip-hop ghetto culture and attacks on me) perpetuates the notion that black people are nothing more than 1970s TV-sitcom stereotypes. ...imposing personage ever to bestride Wall Street--his nickname was Jupiter--Morgan had a thunderclap voice, a ferocious glare and a grotesquely disfigured red nose that, he once ruefully joked, had become "part of the American business structure." Where Rockefeller and Carnegie endured hardscrabble boyhoods, Morgan came from a well-to-do Hartford, Conn., family, and his appetite for bosomy women, enormous yachts (his 300-ft. Von Guerard joined the gold rush to Australia in 1852 but failed as a prospector, and made a career for 30 years painting two kinds of scenery: portraits of the settled acres of the well-to-do pastoralists; and views of more exotic wildness, from the bizarrely sculpted sea cliffs of Cape Schanck to the Australian Alps. These mountains are low in comparison to Bierstadt's Rockies, but Von Guerard memorably recorded what he saw from the 7,000-ft. summit of the tallest of them...

...able to invest $10 million each with Long Term Capital Management might have disrupted the world economy with their avaricious money games. Surely the "geniuses" running this shell game knew the earth-shaking risks involved, and they proceeded anyway. This is much worse than unfettered hubris. Shouldn't the well-to-do speculators be severely punished for exposing all the rest of us to such dangers? SUSAN BARRETT St. Louis...

Tomes--or "Brother Bill," as he has come to be known--has seen some of his best friends murdered on this field. The victims are not pals from his college days at Notre Dame or buddies from the well-to-do Evanston neighborhood where he grew up. They are mostly the hardened souls of the Gangster Disciples, their Vice Lord rivals and a tally of cross-fire casualties who lived in the wretched Cabrini-Green housing projects just a mile or so from Chicago's gleaming downtown...
