...Jerusalem Disease was neither wonderfully performed nor exceptionally well-written; instead it was a very watcheable soap-opera: "Dawson's Creek" featuring skinny guys in tassel loafers. In fine post-adolescent form, the play melodramatizes the trivial and passes lightly over the truly significant. It is hard to imagine anybody in the audience actually caring about the conflicts the play poses; even the protagonists seem strangely nonchalant about what would strike most mature people as the play's central conflict--an alleged teenage suicide--preferring instead to fight about who is dating whom and what pain is caused...

The discussion of the Japanese-Americans' search for recognition after the injustice of their internment during World War II is fascinating and a pleasure to read. Professor Minow's chapter on reparations and the final chapter, "Facing History," are well-written and even engaging. They shake out some of the uncertainties in her argument and show us that if we cannot do away with the effects of torture and violence or replace what has been lost after genocide, then at least we can react positively through recognition of the past events and symbolic...

Bravo to Paul Gray for his well-written article about Tom Wolfe's reappearance on the literary scene with his new novel, A Man in Full [BOOKS, Nov. 2]. It seems that Gray's initial nervousness about interviewing Wolfe proved to be without cause, and Gray's well-crafted prose honors his subject. Further praise for focusing on Wolfe as a writer and respecting his privacy by leaving out irrelevant details like the size of the advance he got from his publishers.
