...Bodily Harm is not meant for the layman. Instead, it's more a workbook for the initiated, complete with checklists and common Q&A advice for injurers, their family and therapists. Strong's effort, by contrast, is a richly reported and achingly well-written account that benefits from a reporter's storytelling skills. As she profiles a range of injurers--from Andrew, a star chemistry student at a British university, to Fran, a wealthy suburban New York matron--Strong deftly crafts not a freak parade but a sad march of the familiar...

...Hill's odd craving metaphorically. It's a creative time in hip-hop history, a pregnant time; there's a hunger for music that is out of the ordinary, that breaks boundaries. You think of a line from one of Hill's songs: "I treat this like my thesis/ Well-written topic/ Broken down into pieces." You slip Miseducation into your CD player. "Now some might mistake this for just a simple song...

...number of letters in the names of each year's NCAA men's basketball champion and Best New Artist Grammy Award winner. (You cared, right?) There's news as well: the magazine uncovers a scoring error from earlier this season that means University of Connecticut star Nykesha Sales, awarded a controversial two-point gimme shot last month, is still short of the school record. And its well-written feature stories include an alarming profile of former heavyweight Tommy Morrison, who is HIV positive and refuses treatment...

...headline "Orthodox Jews Violate Campus Policy With Posters" (News, Feb. 19) is troubling. While Rosalind Helderman's piece is accurate and well-written, its infelicitous head-line fosters misperceptions. The headline, which implies a connection between the actions of several non-students with those of the undergraduate Orthodox community, creates an imprecise image of Orthodox Jewish life at Harvard. The undergraduate Orthodox Jewish community comprises a vibrant group of upstanding, creative and open-minded students. It constitutes a valuable subset of the wider Jewish community and is intimately involved in Hillel's activities and broad goals...

...compelling as "Titanic" was, "Good Will Hunting" gets my vote for Best Picture. It's well-written, well-acted, and just plain well done. Robin Williams, reprising his mentor role from "Dead Poet's Society," is brilliant, as usual, and gained a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his efforts. Matt Damon (Best Actor nominee) plays with wit and skill the tough kid from South Boston who's really a genius. But the real reason I loved "Good Will Hunting" is that even before I entered the theater, I felt like I had some stake...
