...Dudley route passes through streets lined with small merchants, one-room boutiques as well as cuchifrito parlors, whose size may spell chic to the shopper but struggle to the owners. If you're on the bus you can pick and choose from the multitude of storefronts, but behind each is an owner who spends six or seven days a week there, 52 weeks a year. Often the owners are the shop's only employees, working 12 hours a day and worrying the rest. In spite of their labor, roughly a third of these small proprietorships go bankrupt within a year...

Under the Shah education was a means of pacification. Our history books were full of lies about the glories of the Iranian dynasties, and they encouraged racism towards non-Persian-speaking minorities in Iran as well as nearby nations. A special military guard was stationed on most large university campuses to mute student opposition. The number of students tortured, lost or murdered is unkown. ...those dark 25 years, the American Embassy developed into an active policymaking center for deciding the fate of the Iranian people, and was indispensable for the survival of the Shah's regime. It is well-known in Iran that American Ambassadors were close advisors to the Shah and that the Enbassy was involved in the assignment of the top-level civilian and military posts. In short, despite President Carter's failing memory, the American government has been directly responsible for the the events in Iran during the Shah's regime. And this is in the name of you, the American...
