...Thomas Wentworth Higginson was born in Cambridge on December 22, 1823. After he was graduated from College in 1841, he attended the Harvard Divinity School, from which he graduated in 1847. He then became a minister of the Theodore Parker school, but in 1858 abandoned the pulpit, having entered actively into literature and also into political affairs, especially in the anti-slavery conflict over Kansas. In 1862 he became a captain in the 51st Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, and afterwards Colonel of the 1st Regiment of South Carolina, composed of freed slaves.
